Missing hiker found dead after three-day search

The body of 55-year-old hiker has been located after a three-day search in the Nordegg backcountry.

On Monday, Aug. 5, Rocky Mountain House RCMP were advised of the overdue hiker. The hiker’s vehicle was quickly located in the Coral Creek staging area.

RCMP, supported by Rocky Mountain House Search and Rescue and Kananaskis Emergency Services, began a search of the area on Tuesday utilizing volunteers and helicopters.

The missing hiker was found dead in Coral Creek on Thursday by Search and Rescue volunteers and a helicopter crew approximately 12 kilometres from where his vehicle was located.

The deceased was transported out of the area and taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Calgary. The cause of the hiker’s death does not appear suspicious, noted police.

"RCMP express our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased," police said in a media release.

"RCMP wish to express our thanks to the volunteers of Alberta Search and Rescue for their time and professionalism during this search."
