A pair of Red Deer County councillors and a senior administrator mounted their motorcycles to send a safety message on Tuesday.

Councillors George Gehrke and Reimar Poth and operations director Frank Peck were joined by an Alberta sheriff and local motorcycle business owners outside Red Deer County Centre for the declaration of May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.

Mayor Earl Kinsella said the spring brings out the motorcycles and other drivers have to be extra vigilant. Motorcycles are often hard to see as they head down local roads.

“That means we need to be more aware a motorcycle could be passing you or coming up behind you,” said Kinsella.

Motorcyclist are also urged to make themselves visible, follow the rules of the road, stay alert and wear helmets and other protective equipment.
