Municipalities around Gull Lake want to create development plan

Lacombe County is joining other municipalities around Gull Lake in a major revamp of the plan that offers direction for development.

Lacombe County is joining other municipalities around Gull Lake in a major revamp of the plan that offers direction for development.

County Reeve Terry Engen said the county, Ponoka County and the Summer Villages of Gull Lake and Parkland Beach must still decide exactly what sort of plan will be created.

The existing management plan was last updated in 2000. “We recognize in the last 10 to 12 years things have certainly changed dramatically since that plan was developed initially.”

Even the bed and shore of the lake have been transformed as the water levels have dropped over the last few years.

“At one particular time there was never any interest in doing anything there.

“But Ponoka County certainly started that with some of the big resorts going on up there.

“So it was felt by that group it was time to review it.”

A request for proposals will go out soon and it is hoped to have some information back by late January or February.

The municipalites have not set a cost for the project but are waiting to see what comes back from consultants.

The goal is to have the management plan completed in eight to 10 months. Updating the plan will involve collecting all the information available on the lake as well as the existing development.
