A man accused of murdering a Red Deer woman had his case adjourned for a month when he appeared in court on Tuesday.

Bashir Gaashaan, 29, of no fixed address, reserved numerous charges through his lawyer until Oct. 14. Gaashaan, who kept his head bowed for most of his appearance in Red Deer provincial court, is charged with the first-degree murder of 21-year-old Jenna Cartwright.

A foul-up with transportation prevented a Monday morning scheduled appearance and it was again delayed Tuesday morning until Tuesday afternoon because of undisclosed problems in Edmonton, where Gaashaan was being held.

Gaashaan’s lawyer, Will Willms, said earlier he won’t launch a bail bid in Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench until he has more disclosure from the RCMP and Crown.

In addition to murder, the accused is charged with unlawful confinement and indecently disposing of a body in connection with the murder charge, which was laid in Red Deer on June 20.

Cartwright was reported missing by her family on April 12.

She was last seen in Red Deer on March 29.

On May 3, Olds RCMP were notified that a body, later identified as Cartwright, was discovered in a ditch about 14 km northeast of Olds.

The accused also faces numerous charges on unrelated matters, including cocaine trafficking.
