New charges have been laid against a man who missed his trial on charges from a standoff with police in Red Deer last December.

Red Deer City RCMP allege that they were called to investigate an assault in a house near the West Park School shortly before noon on Dec. 22. A standoff ensued and a suspect was arrested about six hours later after a stun grenade was launched through a window.

Dixon Bergseth, 33 was to have been tried in Red Deer on June 18 on charges including possession of a loaded, restricted firearm and possession of a concealed weapon. A charge of assault was previously withdrawn.

A warrant for his arrest was issued and his lawyer withdrew from the case after Bergseth, who had been freed from custody, did not appear for his trial.

Bergseth was recently apprehended and returned to custody, charged with failing to appear in court.

He appeared briefly in Red Deer provincial court on Tuesday and remains in custody pending his next court appearance, set for Aug. 1.
