An 18-year-old Olds College student is dead and another injured when they were hit by a pickup in the parking lot of a town bar early Friday.

Olds RCMP allege the pickup was driven by a man who had been kicked out of the Texas Mickey Bar just after midnight. The suspect climbed into the pickup and allegedly drove through a group of three or four pedestrians in the parking lot. About eight other people in the parking lot also saw what happened.

The 18-year-old died as a result of his injuries. A 19-year-old student was taken to hospital to be treated. No other injuries have been reported.

An RCMP officer in the area tried to stop the truck but it took off. Police called off the pursuit for safety reasons a short time later.

The pickup was soon found rolled on its side and a suspect was arrested after climbing out of the vehicle. A 24-year-old Calgary man remains in custody. Charges have not yet been laid.

The name of the victim has not been released. An autopsy will be performed by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Olds RCMP, along with the RCMP’s major crimes and forensic identification units and the traffic section, continue to investigate.

Anyone with any information on the incident is asked to call the Olds RCMP at 403-556-3324.
