“Like a grandma.”

That’s how Red Deer River Naturalist Judy Boyd felt Saturday morning when Red Deer’s most-watched parents-in-waiting finally welcomed their first newborn.

The peregrine falcons’ first egg hatched in their penthouse suite atop the Telus Tower in Highland Green about 8 a.m. Saturday.

A second egg hatched about three hours later.

At about 12:30 p.m. Sunday, the third egg hatched.

The young ’uns — officially known as eyas — seem to be doing well so far.

They’ve been fed a couple of times already and appear to be safe and sound underneath mom or dad, depending on who has drawn baby-minding duty at the time.

“They’ve also been sort of cleaning up a little bit,” said Boyd, who has been watching and recording the action on her home computer.

“They seem to keep a very clean nest.”

Boyd was thrilled when the big moment finally came Saturday after weeks of anticipation.

“It was great,” she said Sunday.

Chat room participants on the live webcam were also all a flutter with the good news.

Boyd said viewers from as far as India and Texas were sharing their thoughts in the chat room on the weekend.
