UPDATE — Wetaskiwin RCMP have laid charges in relation to the stabbing that took place at Pigeon Lake Regional School on April 25, 2022.

RCMP have charged a 16-year-old male youth with attempted murder and aggravated assault.

The youth has been released from custody on conditions with his next court appearance set for June 1, 2022, at Wetaskiwin Youth Court.

Original Story — A 16-year-old student from Pigeon Lake Regional School (PLRS) was airlifted to hospital Monday morning April 25, 2022, after being stabbed. Wetaskiwin RCMP recieved a compaint at 10:55 a.m. of a stabbing and upon arrival located the victim with injuries. The stabbing took place in the school’s library.

The student was taken by STARS Air Ambulance to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton and arrived to the hospital in critical condition. As of Tuesday morning, April 26, 2022, the victim is reported to be in stable condition.

Another 16-year-old boy and PLRS student was arrested. The suspect remains in custody with charges pending.

Both the alleged suspect and victim were Grade 11 students.

PLRS was in lockdown past noon on Monday. When it was lifted PLRS students were transferred to the elementary school next door, Falun Elementary school, to be put on busses and sent home. School at PLRS was cancelled for the day.

RCMP officers on scene say the lockdown continued as long as it did not because it is was dangerous, but rather the school is now a crime scene.

In an email from Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools (WRPS) to all parents and guardians immediately following the incident they stated, “all other students and staff are safe.”

School at PLRS was cancelled for Tuesday April 26, and the WRPS says it is working on getting councillors in the school for when students and staff return.
