Plans to make Sylvan Lake’s Lakeshore Drive pedestrian friendly to be revealed

Plans to turn Sylvan Lake’s Lakeshore Drive into a pedestrian-focused visitor draw will be presented at an open house Wednesday.

Sylvan has been planning for years to reroute traffic off Lakeshore Drive to the other side of Centennial Park to allow the beachfront to be expanded and a promenade developed along the lake.

The first part of the project, which involved sanitary sewer work, was completed last year.

The next phase, including the realignment of the road, paving and work on other underground services, is expected to be done this year. About $6 million was put in the town’s capital budget to cover the cost.

“Lakeshore Drive is a vital area and all efforts will be put forward to minimize inconvenience for both Sylvan Lake business owners and residents,” says the town in its notice for the open house.

The informal drop-in event will feature plans of the proposed redevelopment and information on the construction schedule.

The meeting takes place at the town office at 4926 50th Ave. from 7 to 9 p.m.
