Red Deer City RCMP have released more details about a volatile domestic dispute that saw police officers face down a man armed with a loaded rifle.
Police were called to 13 Wishart St., about 3:10 p.m. on Thursday after getting what appeared to be a routine call about a family dispute involving a number of adults.
The first police officer on scene was let into the duplex and told a man had been drinking and bothering family members.
RCMP said the officer was led to the man, who was found armed with a loaded rifle.
Using his police radio, the officer immediately called for backup.
The rifle-toting suspect was ordered numerous times to put the gun down. A second officer arrived and both finally convinced the man to put the rifle down, police said.
When police tried to handcuff the suspect, a struggle took place and one officer was kicked in the face and the other suffered bumps and bruises.
The suspect also suffered minor injuries while being subdued and was taken as a precaution to hospital, where he was treated and released.
One neighbour said the man was carried out of the home by four police officers, one on each arm and leg.
Several firearms and an ammunition box were also taken from the residence.
A 30-year-old remains in custody. No charges were laid as of Friday.
