Five days were set aside on Wednesday for the preliminary hearing of a man charged with murder in the death of a baby last October.

The hearing is set to start May 31 for Evan Caswell Gilmer, 30, of Red Deer who is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 18-month-old Garth Leippi.

Gilmer elected to be tried by a judge and jury earlier.

A preliminary is held to determine if there’s enough evidence to warrant an accused stand trial in Court of Queen’s Bench.

Gilmer, who remains in custody, was the boyfriend of the infant’s mother.

He was originally arrested last October but wasn’t charged at that time.

He was arrested again about a month ago and charged.

The infant’s injuries occurred at a residence in the 4800 block of 46th Street.

Police were called to the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Oct. 12 after the boy came in by ambulance.

He was then transferred to a Calgary hospital but died on Oct. 13.
