A flying 20-kg trailer hitch may have killed a 35-year-old man driving his pickup on Hwy 11 near the Joffre Bridge more than a week ago.

Cpl. Andrew Shepherd of Red Deer Rural RCMP said Friday an investigation determined the hitch was among road debris and was kicked up off the roadway, possibly by another vehicle.

Shepherd said the hitch hasn’t been definitely identified as the object striking the fatal blow.

He said police are expecting to receive forensic information on the hitch in about 10 days before making a final ruling. The hitch is about 40 cm (16 inches) long and 25 cm (10 inches) wide.

Steven N. Glasier, of Lacombe County died in the freak incident about 7:20 a.m. on March 17.

Since there were no immediate witnesses to the collision police would like to talk to anyone who may have information.

Shepherd said these people could be anyone travelling in the area about 7:20 a.m., or anyone who may have noticed an unsecure load on a vehicle or saw debris falling off a vehicle. It could also include anyone who may have seen the hitch on the highway.

Anyone with information is urged to telephone 403-343-5591.
