A busy year of construction is underway in the City of Red Deer, with a number of projects scheduled over the coming months to ensure roadways are safe, accessible and well-maintained.

Each summer, the city performs routine maintenance on public infrastructure throughout Red Deer, such as road maintenance, underground utility upgrades, and electrical infrastructure improvements and repair. Additionally, crews are out developing new trails, roadways and sidewalks.

A major project already underway is the Grandview underground utility upgrades, along 43 Avenue and 47 Street. This project will take several months to complete, with expected completion by the end of October. From June to September, motorists can anticipate traffic pattern changes along Ross Street hill to accommodate infrastructure upgrades. Updates on the project are available at www.reddeer.ca/43ave – road closures can be found on the Traffic Disruptions Map.

Another large project is the 19 Street Improvement Project. With most roadway rehabilitation completed in 2023, the focus for this season is roundabout construction, paving from Irwin Avenue to Gaetz Avenue, and completing the small section to roadway rehabilitation.

"Crews will soon be on site rehabilitating a small section of 19 Street between 49 Avenue and Gaetz Avenue, and will also be constructing road detours which will allow traffic to flow while the roundabout is under construction," the City of Red Deer said in a media release.

"Traffic impacts throughout the summer include right-turns only on 40 Avenue through 19 Street and no left turns from 19 Street onto 40 Avenue from mid-May to October. Except for the top-lift of pavement on 19 Street from Gaetz Avenue to Irwin Avenue, all other intersections in the area will remain open for the duration of this summer’s construction. Project updates can be found at reddeer.ca/19Street."

The multi-year infrastructure revitalization project in Riverside Meadows will also continue this summer. Residents can expect to see road closures to accommodate work on 57 Avenue, 57 Street, 58A Avenue and 56 Street. Work will also begin on the CPR Bridge Rehabilitation Project later this summer.

This summer, a number of road repair projects will take place throughout Red Deer as well. Motorists and pedestrians can expect brief delays as city crews complete paving and micro-surfacing road work, trail upgrades, and pothole repairs. To stay informed about where work is happening, Red Deerians can check the Traffic Disruptions Map at www.reddeer.ca/constructionseason.

Some larger projects include: 22 Street from Austin Drive to East Hill Shopping Centre entrance (April-May), 40 Avenue (northbound) from 39 Street to McBride Crescent (July-August), and Riverside Drive from 67 Street to 49 Avenue (August).
