Red Deer still has time to recapture first place in the ParticipACTION Community Challenge before June 30.
The city recently held the top spot across Canada for about a week until it dropped into second place on Tuesday behind Hay River, N.W.T.
Red Deer still holds the number one spot in Alberta, but Vulcan is on the city's heels.
At the end of June, ParticipACTION will determine the Most Active Community in Canada, and in each province, based on the number of organizations that track activities and the number of individuals who take the 'get active pledge.'
The winner of the national challenge will receive $100,000 to support local sport and physical activity initiatives.
Red Deer won the challenge in 2022. Other past winners include Enderby, B.C., in 2019, North Grenville, Ont., in 2021, and Salisbury, N.B., in 2023.
Red Deer also won the provincial ParticipACTION title in 2023 and received $7,500 to support local sport and activity.
Unlike in previous years, individuals and organizations do not have to track their minutes of physical activity during the challenge. This year the focus is on engaging as many people and organizations as possible.
Organizations just have to sign up to track their physical activities and the number of participants who take part. There are no rules about the intensity or time spent on activities. So far 54 organizations in Red Deer have signed up for challenge.
Individuals who register are committing to getting active during June.
