Red Deer Emergency Services responded to an explosion in the city's Railyards neighbourhood on the afternoon of Thursday, Jan. 9.

Just before 4 p.m., Red Deer RCMP issued a media release, stating officers and emergency responders were at the scene of a fire at 5310 54 St., which is the Prairie Bus Lines building.

In an update at 6:50 p.m., the City of Red Deer said that five individuals were transported to hospital, two with critical injuries. All those injured were employees at the site.

"Crews are still on scene and are expected to be there for several more hours," the city said in a release.

The city also noted that no other buildings were impacted.

Nearby residents and businesses experienced a brief power outage to allow RDES to safely extinguish the fire. The city added that 54 Avenue and 54 Street will be closed to traffic until further notice.

The fire has been extinguished and the cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
