Red Deer Emergency Services responded to a chemical leak earlier this week.

At about 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, crews were called to a business in Edgar Industrial Park where damage was caused to a couple containers holding hazardous materials, resulting in a small leak.

"We dispatched our Hazardous Materials Unit, given the type of call it was," said Curtis Schaefer, RDES deputy chief.

"They do a scene assessment to determine what type of chemicals are involved and what the approach will be to mitigate the hazard."

The building was evacuated as a precaution. Schaefer noted that "there was no immediate threat to anybody" at the scene, while the Hazardous Materials Unit determined the next steps.

"They were able to identify the products, determine the risks and have crews go in to contain the small leak. The building was turned back over (to the business) following the completion of that," he said.

The Red Deer Firefighter’s Association published a statement on its Facebook page: "We thank our highly trained hazmat team and all responding units for their swift, co-ordinated response."
