Red Deer Food Bank will host an Open House in conjunction with the annual Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints city-wide food drive on May 24.
The Open House starts at 11 a.m. and will wrap up mid-afternoon.
“Our first Open House was last spring as a celebration of our 40th anniversary. It was such a success we decided we wanted to continue this new event going forward," said Mitch Thomson, food bank executive director.
The public is encouraged to visit and not only donate food or funds, but also see the changes in the food services, distribution and production areas of the food bank.
“Visitors will have the choice of a self-paced tour they can take on their own, or they can join a group as staff take people around the facility. We will also have some five and 10-minute presentations for people with specific interests in and questions for our various departments."
Presentation windows include:
• 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. - Hydroponic Sea Cans
• 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. - Co-op Community Spaces Food Farm
• 1 to 1:30 p.m. - Microgreens
• 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. - Greenhouse
• 2 to 3 p.m. - Kitchen 49/Culinary Services
• 3 to 4 p.m. - Warehouse
Outside these stated times, food production operations will be closed to the public with information available near the growing units. Kitchen 49 will be accessible all day.
Discounted ice cream from the ice cream truck will be on site for anyone who wants a treat. Other free food samples will also be available throughout the day.
