Red Deer is among 40 community finalists in the 2025 national ParticipACTION Community Challenge.

Other Alberta communities to make the list include Edmonton, Calgary, Vulcan, Morinville and Nanton.

The national and provincial/territorial winners will be announced the week of July 22.

The ParticipACTION Community Challenge is an initiative that encourages Canadians to get active throughout June. The national winner is awarded $100,000 to support local sport and activity initiatives. Provincial/territorial winners receive $7,500 or $15,000. Fifteen organizations will also receive $500 each.

The main goal of the Challenge is for communities to encourage as many organizations as possible to register their physical activity and sport programs, initiatives and events and track the number of participants throughout June.

In 2022, Red Deer was the national ParticipACTION winner, and concurrently the Alberta winner. In 2023 and 2024, the city hung on to its provincial title. Last year, Scotia Bank Red Deer won an organization prize.

Hay River, N.W.T. won the national title in 2024.
