A Red Deer Polytechnic student died on campus, the post-secondary institution has confirmed in an email to students.

This past Sunday, RCMP responded to a mental health call at RDP. Upon arrival, there was a small fire at the base of the green sculpture of RDP’s logo beside the front doors of the main campus.

Later in the day, after the fire was extinguished, an orange tarp was placed over the sculpture. A six-foot fence was set up around the sculpture as well.

No further information is available at this time.

“It is with great sadness that we confirm that a student recently passed away on campus,” said RDP’s email to students, which was sent on Wednesday.

“As we navigate this journey it is very important that we take care of one another, while respecting the privacy of the student’s family and friends during this difficult time.”

Students have access to free, confidential counselling services. There is also peer support opportunities and online mental health supports available.

“We encourage our campus community to utilize the supports and services available to them through Red Deer Polytechnic,” said the email.
