Red Deer Public Schools is sparking new opportunities for Grade 11 and 12 students with the launch of a new Fire Academy.

In partnership with the City of Red Deer Emergency Services, this program combines classroom learning with real-world, hands-on firefighting training and experience. The Fire Academy, which will start in the 2025-2026 school year, is described as an opportunity for students to earn high school credits, while gaining accreditation and practical skills that will prepare them for a career in firefighting.

“We’re thrilled to offer students this fantastic opportunity to learn from the professionals at the City of Red Deer Emergency Services,” said Dan Lower, deputy superintendent of Red Deer Public Schools.

“This partnership is vital to the program’s success. It not only provides our students with invaluable knowledge and hands-on experience, but also opens doors to future careers in firefighting.”

Students enrolled in the Fire Academy will participate in classroom lessons at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School and hands-on exercises at the City of Red Deer’s Ed Howell Emergency Services training facility. Each cadet will be fitted with their own bunker gear and other necessary equipment to ensure safety and authenticity during training.

The program is capped at 20 students per year to ensure personalized attention and high-quality training. Tuition for the Academy is $2,000 annually, covering the cost of equipment, uniforms and specialized instruction.

“This is an incredible opportunity for anyone interested in joining an in-demand, continually growing industry,” said Tyler Pelke, Red Deer Emergency Services deputy chief.

“In addition to the incredible financial value of the Fire Academy, this collaboration allows Red Deer youth to challenge themselves mentally and physically, build leadership skills, and gain first-hand scientific application of chemistry, biology and physics.”

Applications for the Fire Academy will open in March. Interested students and families are encouraged to attend an open house at Fire Station No. 3 at 100 Lees St. on March 11 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Program details and application requirements will be discussed at this event. Applications will be accepted until April 11.

“The Fire Academy is an investment in our students, and our community,” said Lower.

“This program not only gives students a direct pathway into firefighting, but also builds essential skills like teamwork, problem-solving and resilience.”
