Royals finish in second place at Stampede

The Red Deer Royals came in with a second place finish in the 2010 Stampede Parade held on Friday.

The Royals received a mark fo 89.3, just below winner Calgary-based Bishop Grandin Marching Ghosts, which received a mark of 90.

The Red Deer Royals were the last band in the parade, marching the more than four kilometre route in full uniform in 27 C heat.

The marching bands were judged on their music, marching, on the colour guard and on the general effect of the performance by eight judges at two separate locations on the route.

Bands from as far away as Phoenix, AZ ,and Victoria, Australia, performed during the parade, as well as those from across Canada.

Red Deer Royals Director Rob Goring said they don’t go out to win, but to put on the best show. But he added that they were delighted by how well it went.

“It feels great,” said Goring.

“All of the kids and the staff knew it had been a strong performance.”

The Red Deer Royals next big competition at the Calgary Stampede will be the show bands live preliminary compeition on Tuesday afternoon, with the finals going on Tuesday night.

The Red Deer Royals will be making their next appearance in Red Deer when they lead off the Westerner Days parade on July 21.
