Safety plan next on Red Deer council’s agenda

Special council meeting to discuss a strategy to tackle crime in community

A Community Safety Strategy that includes dedicating resources to community safety in the downtown and exploring more visible police presence in the downtown will be before city council on Tuesday.

In 2014, city council established the Community Safety Ad-Hoc Committee to develop a strategy for community safety and crime prevention.

At Tuesday’s special council meeting, council will look at adopting the strategy as a planning tool and to direct administration to develop an implementation plan for council’s consideration.

Some of the other initiatives in the strategy include:

- Creating a front-line collaborative network of agencies — police, social workers, educators, public health workers and others — to tackle crime before it occurs.

- Educating the public on the shared responsibility for community safety.

- Continuing current initiatives that support and strengthen families and neighbourhoods.

- Committing funding for research and analysis of data related to community safety.

- Identifying priority risks for Red Deer to address the root causes of crime and safety issues.
