Schools to host conference

A little peace, love and leadership is coming to Red Deer for three days in May.

A little peace, love and leadership is coming to Red Deer for three days in May.

From May 5 to 7, three local high schools are joining forces to host the Alberta Student Leadership Conference (ASLC), Peace, Love and Leadership.

Tania Diletzoy, Hunting Hills High School leadership advisor and counsellor, said about 460 students and 100 advisors from across Alberta are expected to descend on the city. The conference is supported by the Alberta Association of Student Councils and Advisors.

“Basically we bring together some of the finest leaders in the schools,” said Diletzoy.

“We like to call them the leaders of today not tomorrow because they are actually leaders today making huge differences and impacting their communities now. The leadership programs across Alberta are bringing the kids to this conference.”

This is the second time the city has hosted the conference. International speakers include Justin Boudreau, Tyler Durman, Amanda Lindhout and Ian Tyson. A variety of workshops are planned to help the students develop their skills. Leadership teams from Lindsay Thurber, Notre Dame and Hunting Hills high schools have been working together for more than a year and a half to get the conference up and running.

There are close to 100 students working on various aspects of the conference.

“Some of our greatest ideas we have brought into schools is the result of networking with other schools from across the province,” said Diletzoy.

“It’s first and foremost, it’s one of the networking. And then the other one is the enthusiasm and the passion that people have for servitude, leadership and giving back and making a difference and being the change.”
