A six-hour police standoff ended in the Red Deer neighbourhood of West Park with one man in custody on Thursday.
RCMP were called to the home near 39th Street and 55th Avenue about 11:30 a.m. following a report of an alleged domestic disturbance that left a woman with minor injuries, said RCMP media liaison Cpl. Kathe DeHeer.
Nearby streets were blocked off when a suspect inside refused to come out of the older bungalow only a block from West Park Elementary School.
“There is a potential that there’s weapons in the residence,” DeHeer said at the scene, shortly before 5 p.m.
“Members have exercised a lot of patience in trying to talk this individual out of the residence to no avail,” she said. “And so we’ve just stepped it up and called in the Emergency Response Team.”
The Emergency Response Team was on scene by 4:30 p.m. An officer on a loudspeaker repeatedly urged the suspect to come out but there was no apparent response from the darkened house.
About 5:15 p.m., RCMP set off a flash-bang stun grenade. Five minutes later, a shirtless suspect came out of the older bungalow with his hands in the air and was taken into custody by a small group of RCMP members including a police dog team.
There is no word yet on charges.
