A 33-year-old Red Deer man was charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm and one count of breaching release conditions following a six-hour standoff where the Red Deer RCMP Emergency Unit were called in for backup in West Park on Dec. 22.

Around 11:20 a.m., Red Deer City RCMP responded to a report of a possible domestic dispute at home near 39th Street and 55th Avenue in the West Park neighbourhood.

RCMP say a female was allegedly assaulted by a male and suffered minor injuries. Officers attempted to arrest the male suspect, who resisted. The suspect was also alleged to have access to weapons.

As a precautionary measure, the Red Deer RCMP emergency response team was called in around 4:30 p.m. Nearby streets were blocked off when a suspect inside refused to come out of the older bungalow only a block from West Park Elementary School.

Around 5:15 p.m., RCMP set off a stun grenade. Five minutes later, a shirtless suspect came out of the home with his hands in the air and was taken into custody by RCMP without incident.

Dixon Bergseth remains in custody and will appear in Red Deer provincial court on Friday. The investigation is continuing.
