Could Red Deer’s most famous Spandex-ed son dance his way into the nation’s top job?
Vancouver busker Spandy Andy promised to make this nation “tighter and brighter” if he ever became prime minister — a possibility touted by an overwhelming number of Virgin Radio listeners.
“Virgin Radio called me out of the blue and informed me that the people of Vancouver had voted me as the best local character for prime minister,” said Spandy, also known as Andy Rimer. “Thank you everyone for your support. I will make this nation TIGHTER & BRIGHTER than it has ever been!” he posted online.
He also promised to rule Canada with a Spandex fist.
Rimer, who adopted the free-wheeling Spandy Andy persona in reaction to being bullied as a child in Red Deer, is best known for being Canada’s Freshest Dancer, after winning a Colgate dance competition. He also made the first cut in auditions for So You Think You Can Dance Canada, although he was soon eliminated.
Spandy Andy is well known in Vancouver for his flamboyant, free-style dancing along public beach fronts. He recently starred in a bio-pic filmed by Vancouver Film School students, called Spandy Andy: Tight, Bright and Fearless.
Virgin Radio conducted the informal listener survey after New York busker The Naked Cowboy announced he was running for president of the U.S. in 2012 to free America from tyranny.
“Obama is going down,” The Naked Cowboy predicted.
