A series of events were held over the past few days as students, staff and faculty celebrated the first Red Deer Polytechnic Pride Week.

“Following the installation of the Pride crosswalks in 2020 and the permanent Pride flags in 2022, (the Students’ Association of RDP) continues to prioritize fostering an inclusive and welcoming campus by hosting the first-ever RDP Pride Week,” said Erin Bast, association president.

Pride on Campus, RDP Counselling Services and the Students’ Association marked RDP Pride Week from March 25-28.

“RDP Pride Week was a great success, and we are excited to add more events, activities and awareness next year, as well as work with community partners to further this initiative,” said Bast.

On Monday, March 25, there was an event where people could make their own Pride keychain or bracelet. Then on Tuesday, there was a rainbow cupcake giveaway.

There were a number of events on Wednesday to mark RDP Pride Week.

  • Intersectional Circle of Control: the Red Deer Native Friendship Society and MindfulU teamed up with the Students’ Association to offer people the chance to make dreamcatchers, discuss intersectionality and tell the Spider Woman Story.
  • Consent Carnival: an educational event aimed at promoting a culture of consent on RDP’s campus.
  • LGBTQ2S+ Support Group: a drop-in safe space for people to connect, support one another, and discuss success, difficulties, joys and struggles.
  • Queer Prom, which was hosted by PRIDE on Campus.

The week wrapped up with the Rainbow Revolution event on Thursday, where attendees could eat treats while learning about the history of Pride.
