Red Deer Emergency Services and RCMP continue to investigate suspicious fires at two vacant residences in Woodlea early Sunday morning.

Fire crews responded to a fire at 4:33 a.m. on 51A Street and another fire at 4:47 a.m. on 51st Street.

Fire investigator Josh Mah said the second house fire, which started in the basement, was the worst.

“It suffered severe and extensive damage to the whole house and all the contents,” Mah said on Monday.

The first fire caused minimal damage on the back exterior deck of the house on 51A Street. When firefighters were leaving the scene, they saw smoke and responded to the second fire.

The homes are about a block away from each other.

Whether the fires are linked has not been determined.

Red Deer RCMP and Red Deer Emergency Services fire and injury prevention branch are investigating.

The cost of fire damage was not available.
