Tara Veer eyes third term on council

Making the right decisions is crucial at this point in Red Deer’s development as Alberta’s third-largest city, says a city councillor who plans to run for a third term during municipal elections this fall.

Red Deer is a small city poised to become a big city, says Tara Veer, 32, who is now serving her second term on city council.

“I think, often, there are problem associated with big cities that we don’t necessarily want to inherit. There’s any number of issues that, if we make the right decisions now, I think that we can preempt a lot of big-city problems,” said Veer.

Her concerns including the challenges of an economic recession, the future of fire and ambulance services, impacts of annexation and other key decision the new council will debate over the coming term.

Stating that she has been encouraged to run for mayor, Veer said she has responsibilities as a councillor that she would like to fulfill before making that step.

“While I hope to one day have the opportunity to represent our community in another elected capacity, there is much that I would still like to accomplish as a councillor on behalf of the people I have the great privilege and responsibility to represent,” she said.

“I absolutely love our community and the citizens that make Red Deer such a great place to live.”
