Two teens charged with arson in connection to two fires in Vanier Woods on May 5 made their first appearance in Red Deer provincial court on Thursday.

A 17-year-old male and 16-year-old male are both charged with one count of arson and one count of property damage. They cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Red Deer City RCMP responded to a 911 call around 12:30 a.m. where a house under construction was on fire on Viscount Drive. Witnesses reported seeing four people running from the scene.

A police dog team was called in to track the suspects when RCMP noticed a second house on fire a short distance away on Voisin Close.

RCMP were able to extinguish the second fire before the fire department arrived.

The first house received considerable damage to the interior, said RCMP earlier.

Damage to the second residence was confined to the attached garage.

Both houses were under construction and had no one inside.

The teens return to court on June 28.
