Three people hurt when school bus, SUV collide near Sylvan Lake

Two students and a school bus driver were transported to hospital with minor injuries after a two-vehicle collision on Thursday north of Sylvan Lake.

Two students and a school bus driver were transported to hospital with minor injuries after a two-vehicle collision on Thursday north of Sylvan Lake.

The collision involved a full-size SUV and a 72-passenger school bus belonging to Red Deer Catholic School Division, and occurred at the intersection of Hwy 20 and Aspelund Road at about 3 p.m.

Sylvan Lake RCMP said the school bus had been travelling south on Hwy 20 at Aspelund Road and the SUV was travelling west on Aspelund Road.

The SUV had stopped for the stop sign at the intersection and then proceeded west across Aspelund Road.

RCMP said that the quick reaction on the part of the school bus driver enabled the driver to slow the bus considerably prior to making contact with the SUV, thus limiting the damage and limiting injuries of the students on board.

The driver of the SUV, Brandon Buchanan, 18, of Calgary, has been charged with failing to proceed safely after stopping at an intersection.
