Torch bearer

Steven Elm, left, an Olympic speedskater and Red Deer native, shows a thrilled Pete Weddell the Olympic torch after the latter was named the city’s first Olympic torch bearer at the downtown RBC branch Thursday. Weddell and 14 others will carry the torch when the 45,000-km, 106-day relay comes to Red Deer Jan. 15th. Weddell is also on the local relay committee helping ensure the event is as environmentally friendly as possible. RBC Royal Bank, the torch relay’s national sponsor, is still accepting applications at www.carrythetorch.com for the 12,000 bearers needed.
