A train hit an abandoned vehicle left on a rail crossing south of Innisfail, causing police to temporarily divert traffic.

CP Rail spokesman Mike Lovecchio said a northbound loaded freight train struck a pickup truck that was left parked on a rail crossing on Cottonwood Road at about 6 a.m. Thursday. The crossing was marked with lights and crossing arms.

No injuries resulted as the truck was empty, but such incidents are a “dreadful experience” for the train’s crew members, who can’t tell from a distance whether the vehicle is occupied, said Lovecchio.

There was minor damage to the train and CP Rail police are investigating. If found at fault, the vehicle’s owner could be fined or charged.
