Two fifth wheel trailers were destroyed in a suspicious fire under investigation at a rural residence east of the city at Sec. Hwy 808 and Twp. Rd. 381 early Tuesday morning.

Police and fire investigators are examining the wreckage of two holiday trailers destroyed by fire early Tuesday morning.

Allan Weiss, fire services manager for Red Deer County, said his crews were called just before 2 a.m. to a fire at a home-based business about 14 km east of the city. They found two fifth-wheel trailers burning in a field adjacent to the Country Mouse bed and breakfast, located off Hwy 808, southwest of the Joffre Bridge.

Weiss said the fire is considered suspicious because the two trailers had been parked for winter storage, so there was no obvious reason for them to catch fire.

Staff Sgt. Gord Glasgow of the Red Deer Rural RCMP said investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the fire by early Tuesday afternoon. The investigators face considerable challenges because both units were destroyed, along with much of the evidence that would have helped determine the cause of the fire, said Glasgow.
