Two young sisters are in critical condition at the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton after they fell through ice on a body of water on a rural property southwest of Red Deer on Friday morning.

Media relations specialist Doris Stapleton of the “K” Division strategic communications said the two girls aged 3 and 5 were discovered by family members around 10:20 a.m. The two girls were taken by ambulance to Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre then airlifted by STARS air ambulance to the Stollery Children’s Hospital.

“They are in critical condition,” said Stapleton.

Few details have been released including how long the sisters were in the water. Out of compassion for the family, the RCMP are not disclosing the exact location.
