Two Red Deer men were charged with drug possession for the purpose of trafficking after police searched a Westpark residence and Gasoline Alley self-storage locker last Thursday.

On June 29, Red Deer City RCMP street team executed a search warrant for a residence on Westpark Crescent. As a result of that search, RCMP Officers executed a second search warrant on a storage unit.

Police ended up seizing drugs with an estimated street value of $150,000, with the majority of drugs found in the storage locker.

Police found more than one kg of marijuana, psilocybin (magic mushrooms), about 2,700 tablets of ecstasy, plus a large quantity of MDMA which is the active ingredient in ecstasy.

Over $4,800 in cash was also seized.

RCMP Const. Chris Kosack said ecstasy is geared towards young people and police are glad anytime they can get ecstasy, and other drugs, off the street.

Only a month ago, a 15-year-old Strathmore boy died after a suspected ecstasy drug overdose at a Strathmore skateboard park, he said.

The pink ecstasy tablets found by Red Deer police were stamped with a bunny imprint, similar to a Playboy bunny.

Christopher Vanoverbeke, 29, of Red Deer, was charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, one count of possession of property obtained by crime, and one count of failing to comply with a condition of an undertaking.

Nigel Eatmon, 26, of Red Deer, was charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, one count of possession of a controlled substance, and one count of possession of property obtained by crime.

Both Vanoverbeke and Eatmon were remanded into custody and will appear in Red Deer provincial court today.
