Two 16-year-old males have been charged with arson in relation to two fires in Red Deer early Saturday morning.

Red Deer City RCMP responded to a 911 call around 12:30 a.m. A house under construction was on fire on Viscount Drive in Vanier Woods. Witnesses reported seeing four people running away from the scene.

A police dog team was called in to track the suspects when RCMP noticed a second house on fire a short distance away on Voisin Close.

RCMP were able to extinguish the second fire before the fire department arrived.

The first house received considerable damage to the interior, said RCMP. Damage for the second residence was confined to the attached garage.

Both houses were under construction and had no one inside.

The two youth suspects, who matched a description provided by witnesses, were later located and arrested by police.

They were released from custody to appear in Red Deer provincial court on June 7.

They cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
