Wetaskiwin mourns loss of teens in fatal Thanksgiving collision

Two Wetaskiwin students dead, three in serious condition after fatal crash

A single vehicle collision has resulted in the death of two Wetaskiwin area teens, and left three seriously injured.

The single vehicle collision occurred on Highway 814 and Township Road 475 late in the evening of Oct. 8, after the vehicle lost control and rolled off the highway, north of Wetaskiwin. The five occupants of the vehicle were Grade 12 students at Wetaskiwin Composite Highschool.

The two students who tragically passed have been confirmed as Weston Pitcher and Bradyn Heinz. The other three occupants of the vehicle were transported by STARS Air Ambulance to an Edmonton area hospital.

The three teens that were transported to hospital are in serious but stable condition.

On Oct. 9, Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools superintendent Peter Barron released a statement about the fatal collision, “it is with deep regret that we inform you about a recent loss to our school community.”

“This loss will raise many emotions, concerns, and questions for our entire school division, especially for our students.”

“We are saddened by the loss of two students to our community and our condolences go out to our impacted families.”

A collision reconstructionist attended the scene and the investigation is still ongoing.

“This loss is profoundly heartbreaking for our community, and I encourage everyone to rally behind and support the people and families grieving during this incredibly difficult time, including the first responders who attended the call,” Wetaskiwin Mayor Tyler Gandam said in a statement.

“Seeking support in times of tragedy and crisis is a sign of strength and I know our community will support those impacted by this loss any way we can.”
