A Hobbema woman has been charged with aggravated assault after a newborn infant was brought to hospital in late November with suspicious injuries.

Shannon Deschamps, 32, will appear in Red Deer provincial court Jan. 4 after she was charged recently following an investigation.

Const. Sabrina Grunow of city RCMP said Monday police launched an investigation into child abuse allegations shortly after the child was taken into Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Nov. 29.

The child “was suffering from injuries that were suspicious in nature,” Grunow said.

The injuries weren’t life-threatening but were consistent with a physical assault, she added.

The incident occurred while the mother and child were in Red Deer.

No further details are being released at this time, Grunow said.

The accused was released from custody shortly after being charged.
