A Central Alberta program has received a $17,000 grant from Tennis Canada to support the growth and development of young athletes.
Earlier this month, Tennis Canada revealed the 2024 recipients of the High Performance Recognition Program, which is described as a strategic initiative designed to reward key areas that contribute to the development of a strong high-performance pipeline in Canada.
The Red Deer Tennis Club received Gold in the category of Hosting Competitions for juniors.
"Competitive experience remains a vital part of athletic development, and the region's growing commitment to junior tournaments has clearly been recognized at the national level," states a media release.
Manuel Garcia played "a pivotal role" in advocating for increased competitive opportunities in Central Alberta, securing 10 local junior tournaments, including week-long Junior Provincials during July.
Also instrumental to this success is coach Bruno Simon, "whose expertise and leadership as tournament director ensured the seamless organization and execution of these events."
"There is deep appreciation as well for coach Rene Simon of Simon Tennis School (STS)," states the release.
"For the past 16 years, STS has been a cornerstone of junior tennis in the region—dedicated to training, mentoring, and modeling excellence for young athletes. STS’ commitment to fostering grassroots talent continues to shape the future of the sport in the province."
Red Deer's High Performance Juniors currently train with STS at an independent court.
Tennis Canada's High Performance Recognition Program was introduced in 2023, replacing the former Tennis Development Centre Program.
The program consists of five core pillars – Hosting Competitions, WPDP Training Environment, Player Results, National Bank Little Aces, and Coach Results – offering recognition and funding to clubs, players, and coaches across the platinum, gold, silver and bronze levels. The Red Deer Tennis Club was one of 39 clubs to meet the program's standards under the Hosting Competitions and WPDP Training Environment pillars.
