Kaufman grabs first qualifier at Scotties

Jessie Kaufman of the Edmonton Saville Sports Centre grabbed the first qualifier at the Alberta Scotties Tournament of Hearts Thursday.

LEDUC — Jessie Kaufman of the Edmonton Saville Sports Centre grabbed the first qualifier at the Alberta Scotties Tournament of Hearts Thursday.

Kaufman opened the day with a 7-4 win over Val Sweeting of the Saville Centre, then downed Heather Nedohin, also from Saville, 6-4 in the A-side final.

Nedohin beat defending champion Shannon Kleibrink of the Calgary Glencoe Club 7-3 in the semifinal.

Kleibrink dropped to the B event and advanced to the semifinal with an 8-6 win over Crystal Webster of the Glencoe Club. Earlier Webster beat Candace Wanechko of Ellerslie 11-3.

Kleibrink faces Sweeting at 2 p.m. today. Sweeting disposed of Renee Sonnenberg of Grande Prairie 13-7. EWarlier Sonnenberg edged Desiree Owen of Grande Prairie 6-5.

Nedohin will face Cheryl Bernard of the Glencoe Club in the other B semifinal.

Bernard defeated Glenys Bakker of Airdrie 9-6 and Casey Scheidegger 8-6. Scheidegger beat Lisa Eyamie of High River 12-6 in her first game of the day.

The A and B side qualifiers will meet in the semifinal Saturday at 6:30 p.m. while the two qualifiers out of the C event also meet at 6:30 p.m. Their winner will clash with the semifinal loser at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. The final is set for 2 p.m. with the Alberta champion advancing to the Canadian Scotties, Feb. 18-26 at the Centrium in Red Deer.
