The RDP Kings and Queens basketball teams struggled over the weekend against the St. Marys University Lightning in Alberta Colleges Athletic Association action.
The Kings suffered a heartbreaking 124-120 loss Friday and followed that up with another nail-biter on Saturday at home. Saturday night at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, the Kings lost 112-109 to the Lightning in overtime.
RDP had a four-point lead heading into the fourth quarter but weren't able to close out the Lightning in regulation.
Rookie guard Samuel Idemudia out of Leduc had a massive game off the bench for RDP, scoring 23 points in 23 minutes of action. He also added five rebounds, three steals and two assists.
José Mauro Barrozo Júnior finished the night with 20 points for RDP, while adding 12 rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Cole Wicker had 17 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and two steals.
The Kings shot 44.4 per cent from the field, 36.4 per cent from three and 65.4 per cent from the free throw line.
The Queens also suffered a pair of losses on the weekend to the Lighting.
Friday, the Queens fell 74-52, and Saturday night at home, they lost 85-66.
In Saturday's loss, Rachel Harvey led the Queens with 23 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. First-year guard Tyla Hammermaster-Phillips out of Fairview also had a solid contest, with 12 points, two rebounds, two steals and two assists. Red Deer's Jorgia Hicks was the only other Queen in double figures, with 10 points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal.
The Queens shot 36.6 per cent from the field, 23.8 from three and 60 per cent from the free throw line.
The Kings and Queens will both host the Medicine Hat College Rattlers for a pair of games next weekend. Tip off is 6 p.m. for the Queens Friday at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, with the men to follow and Saturday, the Queens tip off at 1 p.m.
The RDP Kings hockey team earned a win on home ice Saturday, knocking off the NAIT Ooks 5-4. The Kings lost to NAIT in double-overtime on Friday in Edmonton.
In Saturday's win, the Kings scored four power play goals in the second period and led 5-2 after 40 minutes. NAIT scored twice in the third but that was as close as they could get.
Alex Bernauer had a pair of goals for the Kings and an assist, while Holden Knights chipped in a pair of goals and two helpers. Nathan DeGraves added the other Kings goal and Clay Sleeva had two assists in the victory. Kristian Lyon made 32 saves to earn the win in the Kings net.
RDP sits third in the ACAC standings with a 9-7 record.
The Kings will play a home and home with the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder next weekend. They'll travel to Edmonton on Friday, before hosting the Thunder on Saturday, with puck drop set for 7 p.m. at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.
The RDP Kings and Queens volleyball teams will be back in action with a pair of games on the road against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers.
