The RDP Kings and Queens hockey teams had successful outings as the Alberta Colleges Athletic Association regular season rounds into its final month.
Both teams earned a pair of wins on the weekend, with the Kings knocking off the University of Alberta- Augustana Vikings 3-2 on the road Friday before a 5-2 victory on the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre Saturday. The Queens knocked off the NAIT Ooks 2-1 Friday at home, before topping them 4-0 in a special game in Jasper Saturday.
Izzy Palumbo earned the shutout for the Queens with 27 saves, and Camryn Ward scored a pair of goals in the victory. Julie Wagner and Mia McGregor each had goals, while Hayley Kolosky chipped in two assists.
In the Kings 5-2 home win, Nathan DGraves and Easton Haygarth had first period tallies. The Vikings cut the deficit in the second, but Dawson Leroux restored the two goal lead late in the period.
Leroux added his second of the night 4:50 into the third, before Matt Raymond cut the Kings deficit in half again at 14:15 of the frame. Kasey Hiemstra scored an empty net goal with 1:29 to go to close out the scoring for RDP. Kristian Lyon made 43 saves in the win for the Kings.
The Kings will host the Briercrest College Clippers for a pair of games next weekend. Puck drop is 7 p.m. Friday at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, followed by 1 p.m. Saturday at the GWHCGC. The Kings are third in the ACAC with an 11-9 record.
The Queens have six games left in the year and will play at SAIT twice next weekend. They sit third in the ACAC with a 12-7 record, with two games in hand on Lakeland and NAIT.
Basketball
Both the Kings and Queens basketball teams suffered losses on the road Saturday. The Kings lost 96-82 to the SAIT Trojans, while the Queens fell 86-64.
Cole Wicker had a monster night for the Kings with 32 points, six steals and four rebounds. José Mauro Barrozo Júnior had 13 points, eight rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block. The Kings shot 45.2 per cent from the field, 46.7 per cent from three and 76 per cent from the free throw line. RDP trailed by just one point heading into the fourth quarter, but were outscored 29-16 in the final period.
Rachel Harvey led the way for the Queens with 16 points, eight rebounds, two assists and one steal. Salome Nuako chipped in 12 points and Jayden Demchuk had 10. The Queens shot 51 per cent from the field, 18.2 per cent from three and 62.5 per cent from the free throw line.
Volleyball
The RDP Kings continued their dominant run with two more victories on the season. They have only lost one match all season. The Queens lost both matches on the weekend to SAIT. Friday's loss was the Queens first since Nov. 2, snapping a nine match win streak.
Lauren Junck had a strong night for the Queens in a three set loss to the Trojans (11-25, 21-25, 22-25) Saturday. She recorded 12 kills and two aces to lead the way for RDP.
Colby Nemeth led the Kings in a four-set win over the Trojans Saturday (25-20, 25-15, 22-25, 25-15), he had 17 kills, four aces and a block. Brett Lower had 12 kills, Owen Langberg had nine and Nic Possingham had seven.
Both the Kings and Queens have four matches left in the regular season, with three of them on the road. They will be at Briercrest for a pair of matches next weekend, before rounding out the season against the Olds College Broncos.
