Kings, Queens basketball earn big wins at home

Seven of eight RDP teams in action Saturday earned wins

The RDP Kings won big over the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves at home on Saturday at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

On a busy Saturday of Alberta Colleges Athletic Association action, all but one Red Deer Polytechnic team that played earned a win. 

The RDP Queens basketball team picked up an emphatic 89-21 win over the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre. The Queens allowed just a single point in the fourth quarter, and held the Wolves under 10 points in all four. 

Five Queens finished with double figures. Fifth-year forward Rachel Harvey led the way with 20 points, 11 rebounds, five steals and three assists. Freshman guard Jorgia Hicks of Red Deer finished with 15 points, six steals, five assists and two rebounds, while fifth-year forward Jayden Demchuk chipped in 14 points, nine rebounds and three assists. 

The Queens lost to The King's University Eagles 84-72 Friday and sit 5-2 on the year. 

Kings basketball also earned a dominant 85-48 victory over the Wolves. Cole Wicker had a massive afternoon with the Kings, scoring a game-high 32 points. The fourth-year guard from B.C. was six-of-eight from three-point range, to go along with three assists, three rebounds, three steals and one block. 

Both the Kings and Queens finish the first half next weekend with road games in Camrose against the University of Alberta-Augustana Friday and in Edmonton Saturday against the NAIT Ooks. 

On the ice at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, the RDP Queens earned a 4-3 win over the Medicine Hat Rattlers. The Queens fell behind 1-0 early in the first, before captain Kaedence Mollin tied the game with 6:51 left in the period. Camryn Ward opened up a 2-1 lead for the Queens early in the second, but the Rattlers found the equalizer 14 seconds later.

Grace Millar and Molly Flynn scored 2:06 apart early in the third to open up a 4-2 advantage for RDP. The Rattlers scored on the power play, with the goalie pulled with 30 seconds in the game to get within a goal. 

Alli Soyko also had two assists for the Queens, while goalie Tora Ward made 19 saves in the victory. 

The Queens are 7-5 on the year and round out the first half at home against the Olds College Broncos on Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. 

On the road, the RDP Kings stumbled in a 4-2 loss to the Breircrest College Clippers. The Clippers scored four unanswered goals in the first, all on special teams. They opened the game with a short-handed marker, followed by three power play tallies. 

Nolan Doel added a shorthanded goal of his own in the second and Kevin Minnoch cut the deficit in half with four seconds left in the period on the power play. 

Evan Fradette stopped 34 shots in the loss. 

The Kings are 5-5 on the year, and will host Portage College for a pair of games next weekend. They play at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre before a 1 p.m. matinee on Saturday. 

Both RDP volleyball teams won Saturday in Grande Prairie against the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves. The Queens swept the Wolves (25-23, 25-21, 25-19) and the Kings won in five sets (24-26, 21-25, 25-14, 25-15, 15-7)

Outsider hitter Lauren Junck led the way for the Queens with 10 kills, Rachel Perry chipped in eight and Autumn Roos added seven. 

A pair of local Red Deer products led the way for the Kings. Fourth-year outside hitter Brett Lower led the way with 15 kills, while left side Colby Nemeth pitched in 14 kills. Nemeth leads the ACAC with 4.67 kills per set. 

The Kings are 7-0 on the year and ranked among the top three teams in Canada. 

Both the Kings and Queens will round out the first half at home. Friday, the Queens will host the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings at 6 p.m. at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, followed by the Kings at 8 p.m. Saturday, the Queens will host the NAIT Ooks at 6 p.m., followed by the Kings at 8 p.m.
