Raiders triumph in five sets

The Lindsay Thurber Raiders and Central Alberta Christian High School Knights of Lacombe needed five sets to determine a winner in Central Alberta Senior Girls’ Volleyball League play Tuesday.

The Raiders won 25-21, 25-18, 14-25, 25-27, 15-9 with Monique LaForce the LTCHS player of the match.

In other senior play Notre Dame downed Lacombe 3-1 and Ponoka stopped West Central Rebels of Rocky Mountain House 25-16, 25-11, 25-13.

In JV girls’ play, Ponoka beat the Rebels 25-0, 25-13, 25-19.

Courtney Archibald was the Ponoka senior girls’ player of the match while Ceyana Archibald was top player of the JV squad. Mikaela DeJong led the Rebels JV team.

• The annual Notre Dame Cougar Classic boys’ and girls’ tournament runs Friday and Saturday.

The Notre Dame girls open play at 9 a.m. Friday against Paul Kane of St. Albert and meet Bow Valley of Cochrane at 12:15 p.m. and William Aberhart of Calgary at 6 p.m.

The other pool consists of Hunting Hills, Cochrane, Memorial of Stony Plain and Dr. E.P. Scarlett of Calgary.

The Notre Dame boys take on Paul Kane at 1:30 p.m., William Aberhart at 4:45 p.m. and Ross Sheppard of Edmonton at 8:15 p.m.

Ponoka, Hunting Hills, Memorial and Dr. E.P. Scarlett are in the other pool.

The quarter-finals in both conferences go at 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. with the girls at Notre Dame and the boys at St. Francis.

The girls’ semifinals are set for 1:15 p.m. with the boys at 2:45 p.m. The girls’ final is at 4:15 p.m. with the boys to follow.

• The Hunting Hills Grade 9 tournament is also set for Friday and Saturday.

Hunting Hills, St. Francis, Camille J. Lerouge, Lindsay Thurber, St. Edmunds of Edmonton, Ponoka and Rundle College of Calgary at in the boys’ division.

The girls’ division consists of two pools.

Hunting Hills White, St. Francis, Ponoka, St. Edmunds and Brooks are in Pool A with Hunting Hills Blue, Lindsay Thurber, H.J. Cody of Sylvan Lake, Red Deer Lake and Rundle College in Pool B.

Both the boys and girls begin play at 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday.

The boys’ quarter-finals go at noon Saturday with the semifinals at 1:30 p.m. and the final at 3 p.m.

The girls’ quarter-finals go at 2 and 3:15 p.m., the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. and the final at 5:45 p.m.
