It's been an up-and-down season on the court for RDP basketball, but both the Kings and Queens ended the Alberta Colleges Athletic Association season with a victory Saturday.
The Kings knocked off the Olds College Broncos 87-74. Fourth-year guard Cole Wicker led the way offensively with 22 points, six rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block. Second-year guard Deandre Rowe had a double-double with 17 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and one steal. José Mauro Barrozo Júnior also had a double-double with 17 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block.
The Kings shot 52.2 per cent from the field, 33.3 per cent from three and 58.8 from the free throw line.
The Kings finished the season with a 7-14 record and will not attend provincials.
The Queens did earn a spot at provincials after beating the Olds College Broncos 89-54 Saturday. Second-year guard Zoey Longman of Sylvan Lake had a huge night, with 24 points, six steals, five assists and one rebound. Fifth-year forward Rachel Harvey stuffed the stat sheet with 24 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks.
Second-year forward Salome Nuako also posted a double-double with 23 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocks. Guard Jorgia Hicks had 13 points in 36 minutes of action.
The Queens shot 46.8 per cent from the field, 12.5 per cent from three and 62.5 from the free throw line.
With a 12-9 record, the Queens qualified for provincials and open Feb. 28 against the host The King's University Eagles. The Eagles are 18-2 on the season and have won 16 straight games.
On the ice, the Queens earned a 3-0 shutout over the Medicine Hat Rattlers, their sixth win in a row. Tora Ward posted the shutout with 19 saves, while Alli Soyko, Molly Flynn and Arilyn Toews all scored goals for the Queens.
The Queens will play the Olds College Broncos on Thursday in Olds, before rounding out the regular season against the Broncos on Feb. 22 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre. Puck drop is 7 p.m.
The Kings lost a tough 6-4 game against the Briercrest College Clippers at home Saturday afternoon. RDP fell behind 3-1 in the first, with Dawson Leroux scoring the lone goal for the home side.
Alex Bernauer scored late in the second on the power play to cut the deficit and again 1:37 into the third on the man advantage to tie the game at three. Less than three minutes later, the Clippers restored the advantage before making it 5-3 just before the halfway mark of the period. Deegan Mofford added another Kings' goal on the power play with 2:58 left in the game.
Kristian Lyon made 35 saves in the loss for the Kings, while Dawson Rattai stopped 32 shots for the Clippers.
The Kings finish the regular season with a pair of games against the Portage College Voyageurs on Feb. 21 and 22. The Kings sit fourth in the ACAC standings with an 11-11 record. Both the Kings and the NAIT Ooks have 35 points with two games remaining.
