RDP Kings and Queens earn weekend wins

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings earned a huge victory in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference action over the weekend. 

The Kings topped the Medicine Hat College Rattlers 3-0 Sunday at home, moving to 5-2-2 on the year. With one game remaining in the season, the Kings are tied with the Lethbridge College Kodiaks with 17 points. The Kings will finish the regular season on Sunday at home against the Ambrose University Lions. 

Midfielder Ajdin Sarcevic scored twice on the afternoon. He scored his first in the sixth minute, before adding his second in the 22nd. Striker Jaxon Fernandes scored to open the second half, and Sarcevic also added an assist on the marker. Sarcevic leads the ACAC will 11 goals in nine games. 

Kings keeper Brian Murray posted his second clean sheet of the year, with six saves on the afternoon. 

On Oct. 12, the Kings fell 2-0 to the Kodiaks. 

The Queens also picked up a win on Sunday, knocking off the Rattlers 3-0. 

First-year striker of Red Deer Kennedy Van Arragon opened the scoring, with a goal two minutes into the second half. 

Fifth-year Alisha Coules scored in the 63rd and Olivia Lundell added the third goal in the 70th minute. 

Keeper Jana Leskewich posted her fourth clean sheet of the season with the shutout. 

The Queens have one game left in the ACAC regular season and sit second in the ACAC South. The Queens will host the Lions on Oct. 19. 

On Oct. 12, the Queens were shut out 1-0 by the Kodiaks. 

In women's hockey action, the RDP Queens lost their second straight contest to the Lakeland College Rustlers. 

Queens third-year captain Kaedence Mollin scored twice on the power play Friday in the Queens 3-2 loss. Second-year netminder Tora Ward made 33 saves in the loss. 

Saturday, the Queens dropped a 3-1 contest on home ice. Second-year forward Tasha Barsby scored the only goal for the Queens in the loss. Hailey Carothers scored twice in the victory for the Rustlers. Mackenzie Gould-Sharpe stopped 22 of 23 shots, while Queens goalie fourth-year Izzy Palumbo allowed three goals on 30 shots. 

The Queens play a home-and-home set with the SAIT Trojans next weekend. They'll play a road game Friday, before hosting the Trojans Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre. 

In Men's hockey action, the RDP Kings picked up a 4-1 win over the SAIT Trojans in preseason action Saturday in Calgary. The Kings open the regular season Friday on home ice against the Trojans, before travelling to Calgary Saturday. 

The RDP Queens basketball team won 64-46 over the University of Alberta-Augustana in their Thanksgiving Classic preseason tournament Saturday. The Kings knocked off Columbia Bible College 79-74 on Saturday.
