The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings men's soccer team locked up first place in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Association south division over the weekend.
The Kings beat the Ambrose University Lions 4-2 Saturday at home to close out the ACAC regular season with a victory.
Fourth-year Kings star Ajdin Sarcevic solidified the ACAC scoring title with a natural hat trick in the victory, scoring in the 76th minute to tie the game at two, before scoring in the 82nd minute and the 90th minute. Leopold Kadezabek opened the scoring for the Kings, just nine minutes into the game, before Josh Clarke scored twice for the Lions to open up a 2-1 lead.
Sarcevic scored 14 goals in 10 games to lead the league, three ahead of SAIT Trojans Brock Mitchell.
The Kings finished the season with a 6-2-2 record and 20 points, one point ahead of the Trojans. They scored 27 goals on the year and allowed 17.
The Kings will next play on Saturday at the ACAC Provincial Championships, with their opponent to be determined on Friday in the opening game of the tournament. Provincials get underway Friday in Grande Prairie.
The RDP Queens soccer team also booked a spot in provincials with a 3-1 win over the Lions Saturday.
The Queens had a 3-0 lead before half, with goals from Paige Kalbfleisch, Kyra Remekie and Olivia Lundell. Anna Langill scored the only goal for the Lions in the 89th minute.
The Queens finished second in the ACAC South, three points back of the Trojans. They had a 9-3 record, with 31 goals for and only 11 against.
RDP will square off with the host Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves on Friday at 5:30 p.m. The Wolves were 2-9-1 in the North Division on the season, with 16 goals for and 30 against. The winner moves on to face the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder on Saturday.
Queens Hockey
The RDP Queens picked up a 2-1 win over the SAIT Trojans Saturday at home, bouncing back after a pair of losses last weekend to the Lakeland College Rustlers.
In the Queens victory Saturday, first-year Mia McGregor got the home side on the board first 7:31 into the opening frame. McGregor picked up her second point of the night, assisting on a goal by linemate and fellow rookie Karli Kutchinski 2:27 into the second. Kutchinski also had two points on the night, with a helper on McGregor's opening goal. The Trojans cut the deficit in half at 6:21 of the second, but couldn't find the tying goal in the third.
The Queens also earned a 3-2 Friday night over the Trojans in Calgary and have a 3-2 record through five games.
The Queens will play a pair of games on the road against the undefeated NAIT Ooks next weekend. Tora Ward made 15 saves in the victory, while Kaylin Schellenberg stopped 32 shots for the Trojans.
Kings Hockey
The RDP Kings dropped a pair of games with the SAIT Trojans over weekend to open the ACAC regular season. The Kings lost 3-2 Friday in overtime and 4-2 on the road in Calgary Saturday.
In Saturday's loss, the Nolan Doell opened the scoring 6:20 into the game.
The Trojans responded with four straight goals in nine minutes and 21 seconds to end the period up 4-1. Cory King, Zach Cain, Tye Carriere and Brandon Machado all scored for the Trojans in the period.
Deegan Mofford scored on the power play at 7:30 of the third to round out the scoring for the Kings.
Kristian Lyon made 28 saves in the loss for the Kings, while Andrew MacLean was stellar in the Trojans net, with 47 saves.
The Kings will host the NAIT Oooks on Friday Oct. 25 at 7 p.m., before travelling to Edmonton to face the Ooks Saturday.
