The RDP Kings are just one victory away from their third straight Alberta Colleges Athletic Association title.
RDP won last Friday in double overtime in Saskatchewan against the Breircrest College Clippers, only to lose 5-0 the following night. The best-of-five men's hockey final featured back-to-back-to-back games in Saskatchewan. The Kings ended up victorious in Game 3, earning a 2-1 victory and a chance to clinch the title on home ice Friday at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre at 7 p.m.
In Sunday's win, Deegan Mofford had a power play goal in the first before Breircrest tied the game at one in the second. In the third, Nolan Doell scored with 6:54 left in the third to give the Kings a 2-1 advantage. Kristian Lyon made 37 to earn the victory for RDP, while Dominik Tmej stopped 34 shots in the loss for the Clippers.
Doell also had the winner in Friday's 3-2 double overtime victory. Alex Bernauer and Holden Knights scored for the Kings in the win and Lyon turned aside 60 shots.
The Kings are looking to be the first three-peat ACAC champions since the MacEwan University Griffins won three titles from 2017-2019.
Queens fall to Lakeland in ACAC final
The RDP Queens quest for a title ended on home ice over the weekend.
The Lakeland College Rustlers knocked off the Queens 7-1 Friday at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre to win the best-of-five ACAC final.
After the Queens won the series opener 1-0 in Lloydminster, the Rustlers won 4-1, 5-1 and 7-1 to close out the series.
The Queens won league titles in 2021-22 and 2022-23 and lost to the eventual league champion NAIT Ooks in the semis last year.
