The Red Deer Rebels completed a three-team trade ahead of Thursday, Jan. 9's Western Hockey League trade deadline.
Red Deer has shipped 20-year-old defenceman Hunter Mayo and 18-year-old winger Trae Wilke to the Swift Current Broncos, in addition to sending a fourth-round 2026 WHL Prospects Draft selection and a sixth-round pick in the 2027 Prospects Draft to Moose Jaw.
In the three-team trade, the Rebels acquired 17-year-old forward Ty Coupland from Swift Current and 20-year-old defenceman Keaton Dowhaniuk from Moose Jaw, as well as Swift Current's fourth-round selection in the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft.
Coupland is in his second season in the league after being selected by Swift Current in the second round of the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft. The North Vancouver, B.C. native has nine goals and 12 assists in 32 games this season. He recorded 31 points in 61 games last year.
Dowhaniuk has played 246 regular season games with the Prince George Cougars and Moose Jaw Warriors throughout his WHL career. He has four points in 19 games this season. The Sherwood Park native was selected third overall by the Prince George Cougars in round one of the 2019 WHL Prospects Draft.
Mayo was selected by the Rebels in round two, 23rd overall at the 2019 WHL Prospects Draft. He played 224 regular season games with the club and compiled 116 points (42 goals, 74 assists). The Martensville, Sask. native also earned 13 points (three goals, 10 assists) in 31 playoff games.
Wilke, from Saskatoon, Sask., was in his first season with the Rebels after being acquired from Lethbridge. In 38 games this year he has eight goals and 11 assists in 38 games. Wilke was drafted by Lethbridge in round two, 29th overall, in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft.
The Rebels also acquired 18-year-old forward Nishaan Parmar from the Seattle Thunderbirds in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft (via Prince Albert) and a fifth-round pick in the 2026 WHL Prospects Draft (via Swift Current).
Parmar, from Surrey, B.C., is in his second season in the WHL after being selected by the Thunderbirds in round seven at the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft. He has five goals and 13 assists in 39 games this season.
On Wednesday, Jan. 8, the Rebels announced the club had traded 17-year-old goaltender Taylor Tabashniuk to the Pats in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2026 WHL Prospects Draft.
Tabashniuk was selected by the Rebels in round six, 127th overall at the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft. The Regina, Sask. native made two playoff starts for the Rebels in 2024 on an emergency basis and is currently playing U18 AAA with his hometown Regina Pat Canadians.
This trade was made just a day after the Rebels announced goaltender Matthew Kondro had signed a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with the team. Kondro, a 17-year-old netminder from St. Albert, was selected in round eight, 171st overall by the Rebels at the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft.
